Notes: The large white house on the corner of 3rd and John Street
in Foley was built in 1901 on three lots purchased from Foley Bros.
It was known as Hall house, and was built by Luke T. Grady, who
was the first banker and owner of the Bank of Foley. The house
was sold to John's father in 1920, so this was he house in which
he grew up as a child.
At the time of the April 25, 1930 federal census, John was
13 years old and living with his parents and sister Ellen in Foley,
Minnesota. Their home was listed as being worth $4,000
(approximately $40,000 in 2001 dollars), and the family owned
a radio. A 19-year-old servant named May Kujawa also lived
with the Halls. The Roy Latterell family lived next door, and
cousin William Hall and his family lived two houses away.
