At the time of the 1880 federal census, father Edward Balder was 22 years old and living with his
wife Kate, daughter Lucy, age 3 and son Charles, 2 months old, on their farm in St. George,
Benton county, MN. His in-laws, Henry and Mary Ann Voerding, lived on the farm next door
with their son Matthew. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169B]
At the time of the May 9, 1885 Minnesota state census, father Edward Balder was 27 years old and living with mother Katie and their four children: Lucy (age 8), Charles (age 5), Barney (age 3) and Frank (1 year old). Charles' young uncle Mathias and aunt Annie Vording lived two farms away. Charles was a bright and sociable young man, and was a favorite with scores of friends. He had recently been sent home from the hospital at Brainerd, where he was receiving treatment for a crushed arm from an accident which occurred in the northern pinery. He had only been home a short time before he began to suffer from what he thought was rheumatism. The pain increased and he was taken to St. Raphael's hospital in St. Cloud where he died of appendecitis shortly before his 27th birthday. |
