At the time of the 1880 federal census, August was 10 years old, attending school, and living with his parents and five siblings, Annie Mary (age 9), Francis (age 7), Charles (age 5), Joseph (age 3), and Mary (age 1) in St. George, Benton County, MN. His father was working as a farmer at the time. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169A].

According to his obituary, he came with his parents to America when eight years of age. (However, we believe he was the baby listed as "Anna" on the steamer "Saxonia" passenger list emigrating with the Balder family in May of 1870.) Following his marriage to Agnes, they moved to Melrose where he was in the employ of the Great Northern for a year. The family next made their home at Park Rapids where Mr. Kampa started a cigar factory. After a few years' residence there he moved to Albany where he resided for seven years. He was next associated with Julius Adams in the cigar manufacturing business at St. Cloud. After that he located at Avon and then came to Freeport and had been making his home in Melrose for the past eleven years. He served a number terms as councilman and did much to bring about civic improvements. He was a strong booster and was at all times active in the welfare of community interests. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and of the St. Joseph Men's Sodality and the Sacred Heart Society. He died of heart failure.
