| and paternal grandmother next door to uncle
S.B. Qvale and his wife on Litchfield Ave. in Willmar, MN.
At the time of the April 20, 1910 census, Florence was 3 years
old and living with her parents, brother Maurice and paternal
grandmother Gurine at the same address in Willmar. On January 19, 1920
census she was 14 years old and living with her parents and brother at 205 Litchfield Ave.
in Willmar next to her uncle S.B. and his family.
On April 22, 1930 at the time of the U.S. Federal Census, Florence was 24 years old and rooming with George and Alma Valentine and three other female boarders in Cannon Falls, Goodhue, Minnesota. They owned a radio. Florence was working as a teacher in a public school, as were her three roommates [Source: 1930 U.S. Census, Census Place: Cannon Falls, Goodhue, Minnesota; Roll: 1087; Page: 9B; Enumeration District: 4]. At the time of the Apr. 13, 1940 U.S. Federal census, Florence was 34 years old, single and living with her 79-year-old father and brother Maurice in the family home valued at $12,000 at 205 Litchfield East in Willmar, Kandiyohi, Minnesota. The family had been living in the same house in April 1935. Although both Florence and brother Maurice had completed four years of college, their father had been educated through the 6th grade only. Her father was a District Judge for the State of Minnesota, working 56 hours a week for 52 weeks in 1939, and earning $5,000 (although he had income from other sources as well). Brother Maurice was divorced and working as an electrical engineer for the power company; Florence was not currently employed. At the time of her father's retirement at age 86 in 1946, Florence was living with him in his home in Willmar along with her brother Maurice and her husband, George Westman. Florence was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, the Altar Guild and St. Agnes Guild at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. In 1984 her car suffered some minor vandalism one evening while parked next to the old Jorgenson home which she had purchased and where she was living while having the ground floor renovated; at that time there was no working garage for the house and so no secure storage for her vehicle. After this incident Florence immediately made arrangements to move to Minneapolis where she lived for the remaining 11 years of her life. Florence passed away in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota on Sunday, Nov. 19, 1995. She was 90 years old. |
