In the June 1, 1895 census, "Berg" was 30 years old and living with his widowed mother and eldest brother Stephanus Arnold in the Village of Willmar, MN. The 1900 census found him 35 years old and living with his wife Mayme and Swedish servant Phoebe Lund in Willmar, MN; brother Gauthe Qvale, Gauthe's wife Johanna "Jennie," and S.B.'s mother Gurine Qvale lived next door. In the April 20, 1910 census, S.B. was 45 years old and living with his wife and Swedish servant, Lottie Rundberg, in the same home on East Litchfield Ave. in Willmar, MN. On January 19, 1920 he was living with his wife and son Richard B. on Litchfield Ave. East in Willmar next to his brother Gauthe and his family. Their mother Gurine must have passed away by then, and Swedish servant Lottie Rundberg was still living with the family at this time. S. B. was in the merchantile business in Willmar, Minnesota under the firm name of Dale, Roise & Qvale until 1900. He then entered the lumber business in March, 1900, which was conducted under title of Peterson & Qvale. At the time of the April 4, 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Sigurdt was 63 years old and living with his wife Mamye and 19-year-old son Richard in a rented apartment at 616 Summit Ave., St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. The family did not have a radio. Sigurdt was working as a Prohibition Administrator for the U. S. Government. He stated that he and Mayme were married when he was 33 and she was 27 years old.[Source: 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Roll: T626-1119; Page: 5A; E.D.: 101] 616 Summit Avenue in St. Paul was and is known as the Minnesota Apartments, and was built in 1928. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The notorious gangster John Dillinger rented one of the front one-bedroom apartments in the 1920s. Unit 307 is currently a 510-square-foot, one bedroom, one bathroom, brick condominium. The 1930 city directory indicates that Sigurdt B. Qvale, the superintendent of permits employed by the Bureau of Industrial Alcohol of the U. S. Treasury Department, and his wife, Mayme Qvale, resided at apartment #307. S.B. passed away at Miller Hospital on 339 Wabasha in St. Paul August 8, 1937 from complications of kidney cancer and bronchial pneumonia. He was 72 years old. |
