Kathleen Winkelman,
age 85, of Foley, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian
Burial was held March 15, 2008 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Duelm. The Rev. Bernard Kahlhamer
officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Foley Funeral Home made the arrangements.
Kathleen Winkelman was born July 8, 1922, in St. George Twp.,
Benton Co., MN to George and Mayme (Doyle) Balder.
She married Peter Winkelman on July 1, 1944 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duelm. She
graduated from Foley High School in 1940 and attended St. Cloud Teachers College graduating in 1941.
She worked at Hall’s Mercantile until 1942. When her mother died in 1942 she quit working to help her dad
raise her brothers and sisters. In September of 1942 she started teaching and taught in District 20
for two years and also in District 26 for two years. In 1943 she attended summer school to further
her education. She enjoyed watching her husband, Peter, play baseball and also watched her sons play
many, many softball games. She loved the farm life and took pride in raising her kids on the family
dairy farm. Kathleen was member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and the St. Lawrence Christian
Mothers.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, Larry (Joyce), Foley; Jane (Gary) Swanson, Foley; Janet (Bob) Abfalter, Foley;
Duane (Lesley), Foley; Kevin (JoAnn), Foley; Tom, Foley; Mary Kay (Steve) Fleace, Grand Marais,
Lynn Marie (Gene) Volkers, Foley; Kelly (Melissa Christensen), Foley; 20 grandchildren,
11 great grandchildren; brother and sisters, Richard (Elaine),
Foley; Terese (John) Weis, Clear Lake; Jeanette (Bill) Kasner, Foley; brother-in-law, Donald Winkelman Sr.,
Sauk Rapids and sister-in-law, Mary Joyce Balder, St. Cloud.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, August 27, 2005, son, Gary, January 26, 2000
and brother Clifford, March 1, 2001.
