"Donald J. Kampa,
84, of Tucson, formerly of St. Paul, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, following a
two-month illness. A strong family man, an energetic worker and entrepreneur, and a good
friend to many, Don left a legacy of the value of love, honesty, and caring. His beloved wife,
Ida Weber Kampa and her family of four children and six grandchildren survive him.
"Surviving from the marriage of his first wife,
Dorothy, are two children, Richard Kampa and
Joan Will; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren.
Also surviving him are a brother, Gene Kampa; sisters,
Dorothy Festigi,
Louise Kirkpatrick &
Martha Hanson.
"TBorn and raised in Claremont, MN, he
was one of ten children. He found his life's work in the tire industry and was employed by
Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in Mpls., St. Paul, Eau Claire, WI, and Omaha. In 1952 with
his late wife, Dorothy, Don founded Kampa Tire Company
in Mpls. and successfully operated the business until their 1979 retirement. High quality work
and commitment to customer service were the foundations of his business that earned the company
a strong reputation and built a loyal following among trucking company clients.
"Don was
passionate about his family. He showed strong interest in their activities, frequently
visiting them in California, Texas, Florida, Ecuador, Minnesota, Michigan, and Peru. Besides
family, Don loved the outdoors and liked to hunt, fish, golf, and play tennis. He leaves behind
a number of lasting friendships made through sporting and other social activities he pursued.
He spent many hours reading and shared his love for books in discussions with friends and
family.
"There will be a memorial service Saturday,
Feb. 6, at the Roselawn Cemetery Chapel, 803 W. Larpenteur Ave., Roseville, beginning at
10:00 AM, with reception to follow. Cremains will be interred in the family burial plot.
Donations in his name may be made to his favorite charities: The Little Sisters of the Poor,
330 S. Exchange St., St. Paul, MN 55102, or The St. Paul Union Gospel
Mission, 435 University Ave. E., St. Paul, MN 55101-4495."
