In the April 2, 1930 federal census, Clifford was 6 years old,
attending school and living with his parents and 3 siblings
in their home in St. George Township, Benton, MN. The
family did not own a radio [Source: 1930 U.S. Federal Census, St. George, Benton,
Minnesota; Roll T626-1078; Page 2B; Enumeration District 15]. After graduating from Foley High School and St. Cloud Teacher's College, Clifford began a long and enriched teaching career which started at Alden, MN where he taught industrial arts for two years. In 1947 he became a business teacher and later acting superintendent in Ogilvie, MN for nearly 25 years. The last few years of his career were dedicated to teaching Special Education in Foley, MN. He was a member and past Grand Knight of the Foley Knights of Columbus, Bishop Marty Council No. 3603. He was a member and past trustee of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Connie Balder Mickolajak recalls Clifford Balder: "He was a good man. I had my second cousin, Ruth Cook, out with my mother on Sunday and we spoke of Cliff. She grew up with Cliff and they lived on the next farm. He also knew my two aunts [now dead] who came from Minot, ND to visit with my grandmother, Anna Delaney Balder. My aunts were Luella and Dorothy Balder." |
