| Notes: | William M. Carley was a journalist for the Wall St. Journal for forty years. |
He was born in Chicago, the son of William and Yvonne (Shaughnessy) Carley, and spent his boyhood in Winnetka, Illinois. He attended Loyola Academy in Chicago (now in Wilmette) and was active in the railroad club. Blll, as he was called, was well known for his front page dramatic airline and terrorism stories, although he also covered the fields of medicine and science, started a law beat, wrote investigative articles and industry coverage including General Electric and other major companies. Many of his articles were nominated for the Pulitzer prize and others received awards for outstanding journalism. He began in 1961 at the Journal’s San Francisco bureau after receiving a master’s degree in political science from Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, and his Air Force enlistment in Texas. After working in New York for five years, he was named bureau chief of the Boston bureau from 1967-1973 and then reported from the London bureau for two yeas before returning to the New York offices. He retired to Cape Cod in 2000. Previously Bill was graduated from Marquette University College of Journalism in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where in 1979 he was honored with the college’s prized Byline Award for his career achievements. At Marquette he belonged to Sigma Delta Chi, the journalism fraternity, and was named to Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit university’s honorary for academic scholarship and college activities. While attending night classes at Marquette towards his master’s degree, he edited and produced a magazine for the Engineering Society of Milwaukee. Many of his articles advocating major changes in the city’s structures were reprinted in the Milwaukee Journal and some adopted by the city council. Bill passed away from complications of small-cell lung cancer, which was surprising since he had never smoked. He had 5 grandkids and three step-grandchildren. His wife Jeanne comments: "He was the kindest, most generous man I knew, quite like my dear father, Adelard. And with a great sense of humor too. He always kept us amused with his jokes and characterizations. It was a happy marriage of 61 years. He loved chocolate, especially cake & brownies which I loved baking for him. He also loved the old family recipe: poppy-seed streusel coffeecake (kuchen) which my grand-mother, Anna Brenny Maier, and my mother, Anne Maier Gendreau, used to bake as well as his wife, Jeanne." -- e-mail to Rae Bordua, dated May 14, 2021. |
