Ancestor Lineages on Stümmler

by Wilhelm A. Schmitz

Letter from W. A. Schmitz to Martin Holz dated May 5, 2003 regarding ancestor lineages for Stümmler surname.

Re: Ancestor lineages on Stuemmler.

"Dear Mr. Holz,

"After our telephone conversation yesterday, I wondered if it wouldn't make sense to let you have all the names and dates I have collected over time to this 'Komplex'. Because there are three (3) lineages with the Stümmler family name, it is not easy to figure out how these generations connect.

"The origins are clear, but with all three fathers, the dilemma begins:

"MARTIN, (No. 234) could by his lineage be a son of BERNHARD, but among the children from his marriages, there is NO MARTIN.

"KONRAD again could be a brother of BERNHARD, but, here too, nothing could be found in the church registers. In any event, in this case, STEPHAN STÜMMLER could be his father, although, there are no matching baptismals.

"This gives way to suspicion that these two respective FATHERS may have had DIFFERENT BIRTH NAMES and that the baptisms were entered with those names.That could fit the curious fact that with CONRAD, all children were baptized under the name WESTERMEIER, and with STEPHAN, the oldest in the row, the birth name seems to have been a different one, too.

"But that all of them were somehow connected shows via the god parents, as it is especially noticable with the god parents of the respective children.

"All of it combined explains the whole problem in this case. Even though, it is about a 'Vollmeyerhof' (full mayer estate) and not just a piddly little farm, the city archives contain nothing at all, and my various researches didn't reveal the least of any origin of the Stümmlers.

"In our conversation there was mention about the Mormon archives, to which I, unfortunately, have no contact. It might, therefore, help if you, if possible, could make use of that source, espacially since you found the marriage of MARTIN in there. Maybe, there are still more dates which could lead to the solving of this puzzle.

"Finally, I would still like to mention that all efforts at the Paderborn's Archbishop Archives in the search for fitting notations or postings in their church records were to no avail, and that in spite of really far-reaching efforts by my two partners."

With best regards,
(signed)
W. A. Schmitz

The Stümmler families (Stommler) most likely originate all from the "Vollmeierhof" STÜMMLERS.

Stephanus Stümmler (Stommler) had in 1672 14 acres of land, 12 acres of pasture and a one-acre garden. The estate was owned by the Barons of Fürstenberg from Grunherren.

Nr. ?? Stummeler, Stephan
  * about 1640 where ??
  + February 26, 1685 Holsen

  oo  around 1660/65 where ??   marriage cannot be found

Nr. ?? N., Angela
  * about 1640 where ??
  + April 21, 1701 Holsen

  Seized Children
  = January 28, 1667 Henrich Godparent: Henricha Gotland
  = October 19, 1672 Martinus Godparents: Martinus Schier, schoolteacher in Boke, Anna Schiers from Holsen
  = May 1, 1678 Joannes Godparents: Johannes Hüsersmeyer from Holsen

It is likely that the married couple STÜMMLER on the VOLLMEIERHOF were not born Stümmlers since JÜRGEN STÜMMLER maried in 1643, yet there are no children evident (or detectable). Hence, STEPHAN must have a different birthname, which complicates the research.

CONRAD STÜMMLER could be another son, but his baptism cannot be found.
