At the time of the April 23, 1930 federal census, Rena was 32 years old and living with her husband, Joseph L., and their seven children on their own farm in Glendorado Twp., Benton County, MN. The family did not own a radio. She said she was born in Minnesota as was her mother, but her father was born in Germany. Rena also said she was married when she was 18 and Joseph was 20 years old. Joseph was working as a dairy farmer [Source: 1930 Federal Census, NA Film No. T626-1078, p. 8B].

Rena and Joseph farmed in the Duelm area until 1959 when they moved to the Waite Park area. She was a member of the Christian Mothers of St. Joseph's parish of Waite Park and St. Lawrence parish of Duelm.
