At the time of the April 7, 1930 federal census, Raymond was 8 years old and living with his parents and his four siblings on a rented farm in Minden, Benton County, Minnesota. He was attending school at the time. His father was working as a farmer. His dad stated that he and Raymond's mother were married when they both were 22 years old. The family did not own a radio [Source: 1930 Federal Census, NA Film No. T626-1078, E.D. 10, p. 3A].
 
Raymond served as a MM3 in the U.S. Navy from June 22, 1944 to May 25, 1946.
 
At the time of his mother's death in 1958, Raymond was living in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota.
 
Raymond married Lucille Irene Brown Urness in 1960 and they had a son, Raymond Ellsworth Jr. on June 28, 1962 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Raymond died on October 20, 1976 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in South Minneapolis, Minnesota in Section T, Site 3425.
