John was born August 23, 1898 in Freeport, Stearns, Minnesota. At the time of the June 19, 1900 U.S. Federal Census, he was one year old and living with his parents and two siblings in Albany, Stearns, Minnesota. John's father August was a cigar maker [Source: 1900 U. S. Federal Census; Albany, Stearns, Minnesota; Roll T623-792; Page 13A; Enumeration District 137].
 
At the time of the June 15, 1905 Minnesota state census, John was 6 years old and living with his parents and five siblings in Albany, Stearns, Minnesota. His father was working as a manufacturer.
 
At the time of the April 8, 1910 U.S. federal census, John was 11 years old and living with his parents and five siblings in Oak, Stearns, Minnesota. His father was working as a cigar maker.
 
On September 9, 1918 John was 20 years old and living in Freeport, Stearns, Minnesota, working as an apron maker for his future father-in-law, Julius Adams. He was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.
 
John's father died a few days after his parents had attended his wedding in St. Cloud. He and Ida were on their honeymoon and preparing to leave the Minneapolis area for Milwaukee when they heard the sad news of his father's death. They cancelled their plans and returned to Freeport, Stearns, Minnesota for the funeral.
 
On January 10, 1920, John was 21 years old, married and living with his widowed mother and four siblings in Oak Township, Stearns, Minnesota. John and his brothers Martin and Albert all were working as cigar makers in a factory [1920 U.S. Federal Census: Oak, Stearns, Minnesota; Roll T625-863; Page 9A; Enumeration District 202].
 
Later in life John moved to Akron, Ohio where he died on November 14, 1962 at the age of 64. He was a member of the Holy Names Sodality and Knights of Columbus in Akron and of the St. Cloud Eagles club.
