In the April 7, 1930 census Robert was 11 years old and living with his parents and his three younger siblings on their own farm on Old Military Road in Clear Lake township. Also living with them were Margaret F. Sweeney, age 23, a single roomer who was a teacher at the public school, and Claude Parker, a 24-year-old hired man who worked as a laborer on the farm. Robert and his sisters Eunice and Dorothy were attending school. The family owned a radio.

In May of 1941 Robert apeared in Municipal Court on a state highway case charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor. He plead guilty, received a $50 fine and costs or 60 days, and had his driver's license revoked until proof of financial responsiblity filed.

Robert Haaf operated a large farm in the Clear Lake area. He was an active member of the St. Cloud Elks Lodge 516 and Moose Lodge 1400.

On June 1, 1976 Robert was killed instantly when he was thrown from his pickup truck which collided with a Burlington Northern coal train.
