The Brewery Deal.
John McElroy today received a telepone message from Frank Mattock,
of Pillsbury, Minn., that he had closed a deal for the purchase of the Balder brewery
property in this city, and that it was expected that his partner would be in the city this afternoon to make the final
arrangements for the transfer of the property. Mr. Mattock is the gentleman who is interested in the proposition of putting
a woolen mill in this city and this is what the building is to be used for.
The deal was brought about through the efforts of the Commercial Club.
The structure is located on the north side, and is considered especially
well adapted to the manufacturing business. It has remained idle for years and is somewhat run down, but the gentlemen who
have bought the building expect to make all kinds of improvements.
The business is owned by the Chas. Powell estate, and it is understood
that the price paid for it was $3,000.
Sale of Searle Block. A telephone message from C. D. Schwab, the Claear Lake banker, to
The Times this afternoon conveys the information that he has purchased the Searle block on Fifth avenue south, and that the
purchase price is in the vicinity of $20,000. This block is sometimes designated as the German-American Bank building. The
first floor is now occupied by the Tileston Milling company as their general offices.
The building was owned by the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance
company, of Milwaukee.
The structure is a three story, solid brick block and is one of the
finest in the city.
No information is given out as to what will be done with the
property, but in any event Mr. Schwab considers that he has made a good investment. He is one of the gentlemen with means
who is willing to stake some of his capital on St. Cloud. The sale ws made through Wright & Bensen.
The building was erected by Judge Searle. It went to the Northwestern
under a mortgage.
