The family had been living in a different rented home in Benton County as of Apr. 1, 1935. His father was employed as a carpenter for a contractor, working 60 hours a week. Both Ralph's parents had an 8th grade education. Ralph was in the 1st grade, but his other siblings were too young to attend school.
