"Graveside services will be on Thursday, April 10,
2003 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Parish Cemetery,
rural Sauk Rapids, for Margaret Balder Smith,
age 97, formerly of St. Cloud, who died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Grace Home in
Graceville. Reverend Bernard Kahlhamer will officiate.
"Mrs. Smith was born Margaret Mary Balder
in St. Cloud on January 30, 1906 and resided here until the early 1920's. Among her
ancestors were prominent early settlers of the St. Cloud area. Her paternal grandfather
Frank Balder owned and operated Balder's City Brewery in the
1870's and 80's, which was the largest of the three local breweries at the time. Her maternal
grandparent Hurley and great grandparent Brennan families were pioneer settlers in Minden
Township near St. Patrick's Church in the 1850's.
"Margaret married Vernon Smith of Jackson,
Minnesota in 1923 and they raised their family in that area, moving to Luverne in 1942.
"Margaret is survived by her children,
Lois Lorange of Ortonville, and Dale Smith of St. Cloud and Santa Barbara,
California. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
"At the time of her death, Margaret was residing
at the Grace Home in Graceville, Minnesota. She will be buried at St. Patrick's Parish Cemetery
alongside her husband and parents, who have preceded her in death.
"Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
"Arrangements were by the Daniel Funeral Home,
St. Cloud."
