Notes: At the time of the Apr. 12, 1940 U.S. federal census, Katherine A. was 4 years old and living with her parents and three siblings at
  417 West Mill, Winona, Winona, Minnesota. They had been living in the same place as of Apr. 1, 1935. Her father was employed as an electrician at a motor company; he worked 54 hours a week, and worked 51 weeks in 1939, earning $1,560. Both her father and her mother were high school graduates. Nine-year-old elder sister Carol had completed the second grade.
 
Kathy was a teacher for over 40 years and had a passion for education and learning. She was married to her husband, Bill Volkman, for 45 years, until his passing in 2006. Kathy was especially close to her sister, Linda Ward (née Morse), and her family.
