On June 2, 1900, Joseph was 29 years old and living with his wife Annie and their 2-month old daughter, Mary, at 4501 Main Street in District 449, Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was working as a plumber. On April 22, 1910, Joseph was 42 years old and living with his wife Annie, their six children and a 17-year-old servant, Maggie Krafenbury in Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was working as a plumber. At the time of the Jan. 28, 1920 federal census, Joseph was 52 years old and living with his wife Annie and their seven children at 323 Roxborough Ave. in Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was working as a house plumber and their eldest son Joseph was working as an inspector for the telephone company. In the April 4, 1930 federal census, Joseph was 62 years old and living with his wife Annie M. and five of his children (with the exception of second son John) at 323 Roxborough Avenue in Roxborough, a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They owned their home which was valued at $10,000 (or $100,000 in current 2001 dollars) and the family had a radio. Joseph's occupation was listed as plumber contractor and he was 62 years old at the time. At the time of the Apr. 17, 1940 U.S. federal census, Joseph was 72 years old and living with his 69-year-old wife Annie, their bachelor son Valentine (age 34), and daughter Anita Baffa (age 27), her hairdresser husband Richard (age 35) and their two young sons, Richard (age 7) and Robert (age 3), at 323 Roxborough Ave. in the 21st Ward of Philadelphia City. They had been living in the same house on Apr. 1, 1935. He was no longer working but he had income from other sources. Both he and his wife Annie had completed school through the 7th grade. Paul Stimmler's comments on his grandfather: "James Stimmler 1927-1985 . . . our first cousin Jim and son of our uncle . . . ran the family fuel oil business, 'Stimmler Oil,' which was a successor to our grandfather Joseph's steam-fitting, tin roofing, gas line installation, and lumbing and heating business from which Joseph retired in 1932. The business was sold by Jim's widow around 2 or 3 years ago to Davis Oil who have retained the Stimmler Oil name on the delivery trucks." |
