  John Kaufmann, 227 Seventh avenue south, died on Friday at 4:30 p.m. after a brief illness. He was born August 13, 1849, in Philadelphia, and moved to Minnesota at the age of four years with his parents. The family located for a brief period at St. Paul, and later moved to Carver county, where they resided on a farm for some years. In 1874 he came to St. Augusta, in this county, and was employed in the construction of a church being built at his trade, that of stone mason. He was married to his first wife, Mary Imholte, in St. Augusta that same year. Three years later he settled in the town of Clear Lake on a farm. While living in Sherburne county, he was county commissioner for several years. In 1898 he removed to St. Cloud and conducted the Pacific hotel. His first wife died in 1900. In 1903 he was elected to the city council from the Second ward, and while a member of that body was its president for one term. In April, 1905, he was married to Miss Magdalena Winson, of Excelsior, by Rev. Joseph F. Busch, now bishop of St. Cloud.
He was a member of the G. A. R. Sons of Herman and Red Men. The deceased is survived by his wife and nine children, Mrs. E. A. Studer, Excelsior, Minn.; John A. Kaufmann, Fairview, Mont.; Mrs. N. B. Thilgen . . . . .
