Johann was a hussar in the French Cavalry under Napoleon, then discharged and sent home shortly after Waterloo in 1813 to care for his orphaned brothers and sisters.

Johann, Magdalena and their family lived in Wilwisheim, Alsace, France. They immigrated to the United States, departing LaHavre aboard the packet ship Sully under the command of Captain William C. Thompson and arriving in New York on November 28, 1839. Johann was 48 years old at the time [Source: N.A. Film No. M237-40, List 862]. He and his family were listed on the ship's manifest thusly:
Jean Stimler, age 48, M
Magd. Stimler, age 44, F
Magd. Stimler, age 15, F
Therese Stimler, age 11, F
Jean Stimler, age 9, M
Nicolas Stimler, age 6, M
Fransisca Stimler, age 3, F
Franz Stimler, age 1, M
With them they took two beds, a chest, a trunk and four bags.

Johann and his family eventually settled in Manayunk, Pennsylvania. He built a stone house between 1839 and 1840 at Tower Lane and Shurs Street that still stands and is inhabited.

He came to Laketown Township, Carver County, Minnesota in 18__ with his son Anthony and his family and passed away there from complications of heart disease on June 22, 1870. Johann is buried at Victoria Cemetery, Victoria, Minnesota with his son Anthony's and daughter-in-law Crescentia's two eldest children who died of scarlet fever seven months later.
