Notes: In the 1885 Minnesota census, Thomas was living in Palmer Township, MN with his parents and siblings. He was still there in the 1900 census. He later lived in Duelm, MN.

On September 12, 1918, Thomas was 34 years old and working in farming on RFD #1 Foley, Benton, Minnesota. He was medium height and build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

At the time of the April 8, 1930 federal census, Thomas was 46 years old and living with his wife and seven children on their own farm in St. George Township. The family did not own a radio. Thomas stated both his parents were born in Germany. Brother Michael Kampa and his family lived on the farm next door.

At the time of the April 2, 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Tom J. was 56 years old and living with his wife and six youngest children on the family farm valued at $900 located in St. George Township, Benton, Minnesota. He was working as a farmer on the family farm along with their sons Louis H. (age 22) and Vernon J. (age 16). His wife told the census taker that both she and husband Tom J. had 4th grade educations. The whole family had been living in the same house back in April 1935. He worked 66 hours a week.
