Phil and Agnes had their wedding reception in the basement, with beer in the washtubs.
Lisa Jensen remembers that Phil played taps on his trumpet at the cabin at Lake Independence, and when he was finished the neighbors would yell, "Good night, Phil!" He also played Santa at Christmas and would orchestrate the family in singing "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Phil was known for his kindness, wonderful sense of humor and great personality. He was caring, funny, empathetic and devoted to family, an inspired (and sometimes colorful) storyteller, very much loved by his family, friends and neighbors. He had a cat named Ludvig. Between 2000 to 2002 he was living at 4213 Islemont Pl., Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. His last residence was Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Phil passed away April 21, 2005 in Minnesota at the age of 84. Robert R. Mullally reminisces upon his cousin, Phil: ATTACHED IS A ST. CLOUD, MN, TRIBUNE 1941 ARTICLE ABOUT THE 217TH REGIMENTAL BAND OF THE LOCAL NATIONAL GUARD. PHIL IS 11TH IN THE TOP PHOTO HOLDING HIS TRUMPET. THIS BAND, MADE UP OF MOSTLY ST. CLOUD AREA GUYS, WAS CALLED UP IN LATE 1941 AND SPENT THE REST OF WWII AS THE POST BAND AT THE PRESIDIO IN SAN FRANCISCO. ROUGH DUTY, WHAT! IN AS MUCH AS YOU ARE ON THE SCENE, YOU MIGHT FIND SOME PHOTOS IN THE PRESIDIO ARCHIVES. I "SAT IN" WITH THIS BAND BEFORE THEY WERE CALLED UP BUT WAS ABOUT 5 YEARS TOO YOUNG. I DID PLAY IN THE ST. CLOUD BOYS' BAND WITH MANY OF THEM BEFORE THE WAR AND IN THE ST. CLOUD MUNICIPAL BAND AFTER MY MILITARY SERVICE. PHIL WAS AN OUTSTANDING GUY IN MANY WAYS. HE CONTINUED TO PLAY TRUMPET THE REST OF HIS LIFE. HE WAS VERY ACTIVE IN THE AMERICAN LEGION AND PLAYED TAPS AT MANY MILITARY FUNERALS. YES, HE DID PASS AWAY ON APRIL 21ST, 2005. HIS FUNERAL WILL BE ON MONDAY, MAY 2, 2005. ALL OF MY SIBS, EXCEPT MARY, WILL ATTEND. -- from an April 29, 2005 e-mail |
