When Mary was 19 years old she and 26-year-old James Mullally Jr. were married in East Grand Forks, Polk, Minnesota on Jan. 3, 1899, and it was in this town that they first made their home. On June 11, 1900 the U.S. federal census found them living together with Mary's 10-year-old sister Annie on Allen Avenue in East Grand Forks' Third Ward. James was working as a locomotive engineer and Annie was attending school. Although both Mary and Annie were born in Minnesota, James was the only one in the family who could read, write and speak English.

At the time of the Jan. 19, 1920 U.S. federal census, Mary was 43 years old and living with her husband James (age 47), and their four children: Clarence (age 18), Roy (age 17), Grace (age 14) and Margaret (age 11) on 5th St. in Staples Ward 1, Todd, Minnesota. James was working as an engineer on the railroad, in addition to his sons Clarence [employed as a machinist's helper] and Roy [also a helper].

At the time of the Apr. 9, 1930 U.S. federal census, Mary was 51 years old and living with her husband James (age 57) and their daughter Grace (single, age 24) at 425 5th St. S.E. in Staples, Todd, Minnesota. They owned their own home which was valued at $3,000, and also had a radio. Although James spoke English, Mary spoke German. Her husband was an engineer in the locomotive industry but was not employed for the time being.

At the time of the Apr. 1, 1940 U.S. federal census, Mary was 61 years old and living with her daughter, Grace Gansbum, and her family in Staples, Todd, Minnesota.

Mary died on Nov. 9, 1942 in a hospital in Little Falls, Morrison, Minnesota at the age of 63.
