Notes: James was born in Stittsville, Ontario, Canada and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 6 or 7 years old.

At the time of the June 1, 1880 U.S. federal census, James was 7 years old and living with his parents and 8 siblings in Grand Forks, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory. His father James (age 44) and eldest brother Thomas (age 20) were working as farmers, and his mother Ephemia (age 41) was keeping house. His sister Alice (age 6) had attended school for two months during the last year, but is the only one in the family who was indicated to have done so.

At the time of the May 1, 1885 Dakota territorial census, James was 13 years old and living with his parents, 7 siblings and 5 other men (2 from Norway, and 1 each from Canada, Ireland and Germany) in Grand Forks, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory.

At the time of the June 5, 1895 Minnesota state census, James Jr. was 23 years old and living with his parents and 7 siblings in East Grand Forks Ward 4, Polk, Minnesota. He was working as a railroad fireman. His father James was working as a section foreman, elder brothers Dan and John were working as railroad engineers, and sister Alice was employed as a teacher in the public schools.

When James was 26 years old he and Mary M. Cressell were married in East Grand Forks, Polk, Minnesota on Jan. 3, 1899, and it was in this town that they first made their home. On June 11, 1900 the U.S. federal census found them living together with Mary's 10-year-old sister Annie on Allen Avenue in East Grand Forks' Third Ward. James was working as a locomotive engineer and Annie was attending school. Although both Mary and Annie were born in Minnesota, James was the only one in the family who could read, write and speak English.

At the time of the Jan. 19, 1920 U.S. federal census, James was 47 years old and living with his wife Mary (age 43), and their four children: Clarence (age 18), Roy (age 17), Grace (age 14) and Margaret (age 11) on 5th St. in Staples Ward 1, Todd, Minnesota. James was working as an engineer on the railroad, in addition to his sons Clarence [employed as a machinist's helper] and Roy [also a helper].

At the time of the Apr. 9, 1930 U.S. federal census, James was 57 years old and living with his wife Mary (age 51) and their daughter Grace (single, age 24) at 425 5th St. S.E. in Staples, Todd, Minnesota. They owned their own home which was valued at $3,000, and also had a radio. Although he spoke English, his wife Mary spoke German. James was an engineer in the locomotive industry but was not employed for the time being.

James died on June 21, 1938 in Minneapolis, Ramsey, Minnesota at the age of 65.

Predating diesels and streamliners were gas-electric cars. The engine was up front followed (usually) by a baggage or railway post office compartment and coach seating.
Sometimes dubbed "doodlebugs" for their ungainly appearance, they were an effort to save money over conventional steam-powered trains.
