At the time of the February 1, 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Joseph L. was 24 years old and living with his wife Rena, their son Earl and daughter Leona on a farm in Glendorado Twp., Benton, Minnesota. Joseph was working as a farmer in general farming.

At the time of the April 23, 1930 federal census, Joseph L. was 35 years old and living with his wife, Rena, and their seven children on their own farm in Glendorado Twp., Benton County, MN. The family did not own a radio. He said he was born in Minnesota, but both his parents were born in Germany. Joseph also said he was married when he was 20 and Rena was 18 years old. Joseph was working as a dairy farmer [Source: 1930 Federal Census, NA Film No. T626-1078, p. 8B].

Joseph and Rena farmed in the Duelm area until 1959 when he retired and they moved to the Waite Park area.
