At 18 years of age John went to California where he worked in the Imperial Valley and drove 20 mule team Borax in Death Valley. When he returned to Minnesota he worked in logging camps along the Mississippi river. While working in a sawmill in Bowlus, Minnesota he met and married Rose Schwintek. (I believe this is the same sawmill that was owned by the Popilek brothers -- Joseph Kampa who married Appolonia Thering also worked here). After several years they moved to Saint Cloud where he worked at several places; a sash and door factory, Ervin's flour mill and building roads during the thirty's depression.

The family moved to St. Paul in 1942 or 1943. John first worked at the Capitol flour mill and later at Robin Hood flour where he remained until injured on the job.

John died June 21, 1963 in St. Paul, where he is buried. Their children were Arnold, Rita, Mary and Margaret -- the last two were twins.
