At the time of the June 9, 1870 federal census, John was 8 years
old and living with his parents and 7 siblings in St. George, Benton
County, MN. He was attending school at the time. His father was
working as a farmer on a farm which was assessed at $1,200. The
value of his personal estate was $300. He stated he was born in
Prussia as was his wife, but John was born in Minnesota.
At the time of the May 1, 1875 Minnesota territorial census, John was 12 years old and living with his parents and 9 siblings in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. At the time of the June 17, 1880 federal census, John was 19 years old and living with his parents and 8 siblings on the family farm in St. George, Benton County, MN. Brothers Jacob and Blasious worked with him and their father as farm laborers. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 170D] On May 25, 1885 at the time of the Minnesota state census, John was 24 years old and living with his parents and five siblings in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. At the time of the Minnesota state census on July 3, 1895, John was 32 years old, living alone and working as a farmer in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. At the time of the June 7, 1900 federal census, John was 39 years old and living with his wife Elizabeth and their two young children in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. He and his wife had been married three years and were the parents of two children, both of whom were still living. John was working as a farmer. At the time of the June 21, 1905 Minnesota state census, John was years old and living with his wife Lucy and their three children in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. John was working as a farmer. At the time of the April 28, 1910 federal census, John was 47 years old and living in St. George, Benton, Minnesota with his wife Lucy, their three children and Melissa Rowe, a 20-year-old single boarder from Maine who was working as a public school teacher. He and his wife had been married for 13 years and had four children, three of whom were still living. He was working as a farmer in general farming. John, Lucy and their four children were listed in the 1913-1914 Benton, Meeker, and Todd Counties, Minnesota Farm Directory. It stated they lived in Section 16, 21 of St. George, Benton County and that they had been 19 years in the county. At the time of the Jan. 3, 1920 U.S. federal census, John was 57 years old and living with his wife Lucy and their five children in St. George, Benton, Minnesota. John stated that both his parents were from Germany and spoke German. He and his wife and family were born in Minnesota. John was working as a farmer in general farming. At the time of the April 10, 1930 federal census, John was 65 years old and living with his wife, Lucy, daughter Kathryn and son Gilbert on the family farm in St. George Twp., Benton County, MN. The family owned a radio. John Abfalter passed away at 7:45 p.m. on July 14, 1932 after an illness of three months' duration. He was 69 years old. |
