| Hazel A. Balder, 92, of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in St. Francis in the Park
Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She lived in her own home on Oakes Avenue until last August when ill health prevented her from living independently. Born on the family farm in Minot, N.D., on Oct. 4, 1911, to William and Ida (Marcott) Wendt, she was the eldest of four children. Hazel had attended the Minot College of Commerce. She married Edward W. Balder on Oct. 26, 1929, in Estevan, Saskatchewan. They moved to Superior in 1936 so Edward could continue to work with the Great Northern Railroad. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the Election Board at Howe School, and she was a 62-year member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, joining in June of 1942. She had been a volunteer at Superior Memorial Hospital, and a Cub Scout leader. Hazel could sew anything and loved to travel. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost 62 years, Edward; her brothers, Russell and Jack Wendt; and her sister, Pearl Wendt. She is survived by a son, Edward W. (Margaret) Balder, Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Connie (Ray) Mickolajak of Superior; grandsons Scott Balder, Las Vegas, Nev., Mark (Sarah) Balder, Peoria, Ariz., and Michael (Sara) Balder, Temecula, Calif.; a granddaughter, Julie (William) Wing, Superior; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Megan, Jack, Quinn, Erika, Brandon and Emma; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in the Thompson–Hegstrom Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Urban and Edward Meulemans will co-officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, or to the Telecare Volunteer Program at St. Mary’s Hospital, Superior. -- The Daily Telegram, Superior, Wisconsin |
