Charles emigrated from Germany to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1849 when he
was 29 years old. He declared his intent to become a naturalized American citizen March 6, 1849
and took his oath of allegiance on October 5, 1852, on both occasions in the Common Pleas Court.
At the time of the Aug. 24, 1850 federal census, Charles was 30 years old and living with his wife, Theresa and their son John (born in March of that year) along with her parents and four siblings in Manayunk Lower Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charles was working as a weaver. At the time of the June 27, 1870 federal census, Charles was 50 years old and living with his wife and their eight children in Philadelphia Ward 21 District 69, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charles and children Mary, Charles and Rosanna all worked in a cotton mill. Son John was working as a house carpenter. Children Nicholas and Frank were attending school, and Fanny and Elizabeth were both at home with their mother. |
