At the time of the June 4, 1895 Minnesota state census, Catherine was 7 years old and living
with her parents and five siblings in Morris, Stevens, Minnesota. She was the third of six sisters. Her father, John F. Shields, was working as a car inspector
[1895 Minnesota State Census, Roll V290_100, Line 4]. The large white house on the corner of 3rd and John Street in Foley was built in 1901 on three lots purchased from Foley Bros. It was known as Hall house, and was built by Luke T. Grady, who was the first banker and owner of the Bank of Foley. The house was sold to John F. Hall in 1920, where they lived for 61 years. Catherine Shields married John F. Hall in 1910 when she was 22 and he was 34 years old. They had four children. After her husband's death, Catherine lived in the house until 1981 when it was sold to the Daniel Carson family. At the time of the April 25, 1930 federal census, Catherine lived with her husband John and two children in Foley, Benton, Minnesota. Their house was listed as being worth $4,000 (approximately $40,000 in 2001 dollars), and the family owned a radio. A 19-year-old servant named May Kujawa also lived with the Halls. The Roy Latterell family lived next door, and nephew William Hall and his family lived two houses away. |
