At the time of the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Barney Winkelman was 45 years old and living in Santiago, Sherburne, Minnesota with his wife Mary and their five children: Mary C. (age 8); Joseph T. (age 7); Frank J. (age 5); Johnie B. (age 3); and Annie T. (1 year old). All the children were born in Minnesota. Barney was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1885. He currently was a naturalized citizen and a farmer. Barney and Mary had been married for 9 years [Source: ED 135, Sheet _B, Dwelling 37, Family 38, Lines 80-86].

At the time of the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Barney still was living in Santiago, Sherburne, Minnesota and working as a farmer. He was 54 years old and had been married 19 years. Living with him was wife Mary, (age 43), the mother of 8 children, all of whom still were living on the family farm: Mary K. (age 18), Joseph T., (age 17 and a laborer on the home farm), Frank J., (age 15 and a laborer on the home farm), John B., (age 13 and a laborer on the home farm), Anne T., (age 11), George H., (age 8), Regina J., (age 4) and Rosy E., (4 months old) [Source: ED 127, Dwelling 70, Family 70, Lines 51-60].

At the time of the 1920 U.S. Federal Census Barney was 65 years old and still living on his own farm in Santiago, Sherburne, Minnesota. He stated that he was born in Germany, entered the country in 1878, and was naturalized in 1887. Living with him was his wife Mary (age 53), born in Wisconsin, and four of their children, all born in Minnesota: son Joe A., (age 26), a farm laborer on home farm; son George H, (age 18), also a farm laborer on the home farm; Regina J., (age 14); and Rosa E., (age 10) [Source: ED 176, Sheet 6B, Dwelling 123, Family 123].

At the time of the April 8, 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Barney was 75 years old and living with his wife Mary in a rented house in St. George Township, Benton, Minnesota. They did not own a radio. He stated that both his parents were born in Germany.
