Notes: Rick Kampa is the Volunteer Lawyers Network Volunteer of the Year for 2006. VLN is the primary pro bono
provider of legal services for Hennepin County, Minnesota. He began volunteering for them in 1995 in the areas of contracts, consumer issues, home ownership/real property/housing, job discrimination, landlord/tenant, wills and probate and general civil litigation. During this time he regularly volunteered at various walk-in clinics, and provided full representation to many low-income clients. Rick was recognized for his many pro bono contributions at the Fund for the Legal Aid Society Dinner on April 26, 2006. As the VLN states:
"Currently, there exists an unprecedented need for legal representation for the disadvantaged in Hennepin County. Richard Kampa has stepped forward to help meet this need by representing clients on a pro bono basis who would otherwise lack access to justice. He has helped clients in danger of losing basic necessities of life such as housing, shelter, medical care and the financial ability to provide these necessities to their families.

"By virtue of his representation, Mr. Kampa has assisted numerous low-income homeowners avoid mortgage foreclosure and thus saved their housing and most valuable (and perhaps only) asset. He represented a client who was on permanent disability and being harassed by (5) different collections agencies for payment of a student loan he simply could not afford to repay. After Mr. Kampa interceded on his behalf, the Dept. of Education granted cancellation of the loan based on the disability. Mr. Kampa also assisted a low-income client with no health insurance in negotiating an agreement with a hospital threatening her with garnishment for her bill incurred as a result of a lengthy hospitalization. Currently, he is handling a quiet title action for a low-income family with five children in an effort to avoid losing the family home. The list and stories of clients benefited by his representation goes on and on."
(Don Kampa's memories of Rick Kampa): "Of course, our first grandchild was Rick. We gave him lots of attention because he was the first one. . . . We were together so much then that he has always seemed like a son to us.

"When the family moved away, we managed to keep close to the kids. Before Rick graduated from high school, I had been talking to him about going to the University of Minnesota. The day after he graduated, he got in his old car and took off for St. Paul. I think they were living in Atlanta at the time. So he came here to live with us and enrolled at the university. He stayed with us all through his time at the university. However, it was a shorter time than usual because he was such a hard worker that he went to school year round and graduated in three years! After that, he went to Mitchell Law School where he also went through a four year course in three years. By that time, he felt that he wanted to be on his own, so he no longer stayed with us.

"He's now in law practice in St. Paul. He worked for a law firm in Minneapolis for quite some time, and then decided to go out on his own. He set up his office two or three years ago, and is getting along fine. He married Patti Buss, who is also an attorney and she has a practice as well. They have two children, Philip and Kate, a boy and a girl, and I have had a lot of fun with them. We're fishing buddies, among other things."
