At the time of the Apr. 8, 1940 U.S. federal census, Raymond was 28 years old and living with his 21-year-old wife Florence and their two young daughters, Shirley (age 4) and Constance (age 1), in their own home worth $1,200 at 4541 Sixth St. in Columbia Heights, Anoka, Minnesota. On Apr. 1, 1935 he and his wife were living in rural Benton County, Minnesota. His highest grade completed was 5th grade of elementary school. Raymond was working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year as a laborer in wholesale box making, earning $1,900 in 1939. He did not have any other sources of income.
