| Grandpa Su has always been a part of my life and my brother Kyle's life. He babysat us pretty much every summer break when we were growing up, and he was the best babysitter a kid could ever ask for. In the mornings, he'd
let us watch countless episodes of Scooby Doo on Cartoon Network. In the afternoons, he would sit in his Lazyboy recliner chair and read his Chinese newspaper, or occasionally watch wrestling matches on tv; that was something
Kyle and I always found fascinating and very amusing. He made sure we didn't get into any trouble, though I'd like to think we were fairly easy children to babysit. He always had rice porridge ready on the stove for us, in case
got hungry. I remember a few times I asked him to make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for snack. Those sandwiches stick out in my memory as being particularly delicious because he made them with strawberry jam, and at
our house we only ever had grape jam. It seemed like an extra special treat to have that sweet strawberry jam at Grandpa's House.
As you may know, our grandpa didn't speak much English, and Kyle and I only speak English. But even though we weren't able to communicate in the same language, Kyle and I always knew how much our grandpa loved and cared about us. He remembered every birthday, every Christmas, every Chinese New Year, and even insisted on giving us extra spending money every time we went on family vacations. He was a kind, generous, and loving soul. He went through a lot to get his family here to the United States, and for that we will always be inspired and grateful. He was a wonderful grandfather and we are extremely proud to be his grandchildren. May he rest in peace. Thank you. |
