At the time of the June 24, 1870 federal census, John was 20 years old and living with his parents and seven siblings in Philadelphia Ward 21 District 69, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was working as a house carpenter. At the time of the 1880 federal census, John was 29 years old and living with his wife Annie, sons Charles (age 6) and William (age 3) and daughter Annie (age 1) at 4356 Pechin St., Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. He was working as a carpenter. He stated that both his parents were born in Germany but he was born in Pennsylvania. His wife Annie and both her parents were born in Ireland. All of John's and Annie's children were born in Pennsylvania [Source: NA Film No. T9-1180, p. 168C]. At the time of the June 1, 1900 federal census, John was 50 years old and living with his wife Anna and all five of their children at 4110 Terrace Street in Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was working as a house builder. At the time of the April 16, 1910 federal census, John was 60 years old and living with his wife Anna and four of their children (all single) at 4116 Terrace Street in Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was working as a builder in a building company. John and Anna had been married for 38 years; they were the parents of seven children, five of whom were still living. At the time of the January 26, 1920 federal census, John was 69 years old, a widower living at 4116 Terrace Street in Philadelphia Ward 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with three of his children (all single). He was working as a house builder. At the time of the April 11, 1930 federal census, John was 80 years old and living with his children, Charles (age 46), Theresa (age 44), and widowed daughter, 52-year-old Anna Duffy, in a home rented for $40/month at 468 Martin St. in Philadelphia. The family owned a radio. John was retired and his son Charles was working as a machinist in the automobile industry. John was 23 years old when he was married. His daughter Anna was married at age 27. Neither Annie nor Theresa worked outside the home. At the time of the April 2, 1940 federal census, John was 90 years old and living with his children, Charles (age 66), Theresa (age 59), and 62-year-old widowed daughter, Anna Duffy, at 468 Martin St. in Philadelphia. None of them were working. They all had been living at the same place in April 1935. The highest grade completed by his children was 6th grade elementary. John passed away of celebral palsy and senility on January 10, 1946 at 468 Martin St. in Philadelphia. He was 95 years old. The death was reported by his daughter, Anna Duffy. |
