Notes: John immigrated to New York from Ireland in approximately 1893. On his daughter Louise's birth certificate in 1909, John is listed as being 38 years of age.
  He and his wife Mary lived at 935 Oakland Place, New York City at the time. This address no longer exists.
 
At the time of the April 16, 1910 federal census, John was 40 years old and living with his wife May and 8-month-old daughter Louise at 117 E. 119 St. in New York City. He stated that he was born in He and May had been married for two years and he was working as a tile layer in the building line.
 
In 1917 John was working as a tile setter at the Arrow Head Garage located at 4162 Broadway. He and his family were living at 220 W. 69th in New York City at the time. [Source: 1917 NYC Directory]
 
John died January 28th, 1918 at 12:11 P.M. at his residence at 460 W. 166th St., New York City. The cause of death was listed as chronic nephritis. He was 48 years old. [Source: NYC Death Certificate 3468]
 
John was interred at Calvary Cemetery on January 31, 1919 in Section 35, Range 9, Plot D, Grave 21. The deedholder for the grave plot was George H. Smith who was living at 229 West 142nd Street in New York. [Source: Deed #861, purchased February 8, 1904]
 
Mary Frances "Gertrude" Smith reminisces on her father: "We had a picture of him over our kitchen table for years; he had a big mustache. He was very fair and had blonde hair. My only memory of him alive was that I can remember running to him, and him picking me up and hugging me." [As related to nephew Paul T.
