Two dead following Malott murder-suicide

MALOTT — A landlord and his tenant were killed today in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide.

Okanogan County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 1481 Old Highway 97 in Malott at about 12:30 p.m. where they found William T. Bordua, 65, of Okanogan, and Tony J. Halford, 47, dead, said Sheriff Frank Rogers.

He said Bordua and his wife, Anita, went to the home to evict Halford, and when Halford became aggressive toward Anita, her husband stepped in and Halford shot him with a semi-automatic .40-caliber pistol. He was shot once in the chest.

“As soon as Bill stepped in, he (Halford) pulled the gun out from under his pillow, and shot him,” Rogers said. “Then he tells her, ‘This bullet’s for you.’”

Rogers said Anita Bordua crouched down on the floor expecting to be shot when Halford instead walked out onto the porch and shot himself.

Anita Bordua was not injured and is now with family, the sheriff said.

Rogers said Halford has had a few minor incidents with police, but no major issues.

He said he’s known the Borduas for several years. He said William had volunteered at the Okanogan School District. “He was a nice guy. He came to all the games,” he said.

Rogers said this was the fourth murder in Okanogan County this year.
