Questions of Legacy

What ideals and characteristics did we inherit from our ancestors who emigrated from Europe to Minnesota and settled in this area, what did say and do that was handed down to you and your family? What part of the culture brought from Silesia, Prussia or other parts of Europe are seen in us today? What parts of the culture of 19th century rural America are still with us?

Memories of the Past

What were the reasons they left the old country? Was it for economic reasons, political reasons, religious persecution, military draft, family feud, health or personal issues, fleeing the law, search for a better life or a combination of these and/or something else.

How is it that they chose to come to Minnesota and this area?

How was the ocean trip and the trip from where they landed to Minnesota and how was it financed?

What were some of the fears about resettling? How were they treated on arrival? Were they pleased or disappointed with what they found on arrival?

What did they do for money and how did they pay for the necessities of life the first few years?

If they were farmers how did they select and buy the land they farmed or if they did not farm how did they find a place to live and make a living?

What were the hardest parts of being a settler in making a living and raising a family?

How did they feel about becoming citizens of the US? About learning English?

How strongly did they cling to the culture and nationality from which they came?

What joys and pleasures did those settlers have? What concerns and sorrows?

Which of these had the biggest influences on their daily lives such as: ethnic identity, health/disease, the church, civic organizations, politics, neighbors, family, government, weather, newspapers, learning English, schools, money, family survival or _______________, __________________ and _________________?

Influences on us today

Can you think of traits and characteristics that are found in your family through the generations that might have been inherited from the men and women among your settler ancestors?

Examples: work ethic, ambition, generosity, optimism, caring for others; independence; forgiveness, kindness, even temperament, tolerance, stubbornness, friendliness, curiosity, interest in education, interest or talent in art, craft, music; athletics; nature; faith in God; civic involvement; prejudice; aggression; anger; timidity: intemperance; pessimistic or optimistic view of life; inferiority, pride, depression, strong family bonds, other ____________,_________________, ______________

Are there any cultural traits or practices that you see reflected in your family today?

Is anyone in your family remembered for a goal or purpose they had for their life?

How would you describe the legacy left in your memory by your dad and mom, your grandmother and grandfather and great-grandmother and great-grandfather?

Was there an uncle or aunt or cousin you think left a legacy that still influences your family?
