At the time of the Apr. 10, 1940 U.S. federal census, James was 36 years old and living with his 34-year-old wife, Lorraine, and their four children in a home rented for $25/month at 8535 Ridge Ave. in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They had been living in the same house as of Apr. 1935 as well. The three oldest children were attending school, but Eugene was still an infant. James worked at a private service, heating and gas business, and worked 45 hours a week for 52 weeks in 1939. He also had other income. On Dec. 5, 1955, James and Lorraine flew from Kindley Field, Bermuda to Idlewild Airport, Idlewild, New York on British Overseas Airways flight number BA653/375. Paul Stimmler's comments on his Uncle Jim: "Here is a good picture of my favorite uncle and godfather Jim Stimmler and his wife Lorraine Beck Stimmler taken a few months before he died. His middle name was in honor of your ancestor Franz Anton 1838-1906. I recall uncle Jim talking about his father Joseph describing 'Uncle Tony's' visits East to Manayunk and that he was very well liked by the family. "My father Leo (Leon) 1905-1964 and uncle Jim were very close all of their lives. He was very generous to me and my family as we were growing up. "He was a very successful businessman and I still think of him when I see the Stimmler Fuel Oil trucks go by (now owned by Davis Oil Co.). He was very intelligent and a clever investor. He gave me some very good advice over the 20 years after my own father died . . . acted as a mentor and surrogate advisor to me." From a letter to Rae Bordua dated March 17, 2003. |
