| parents to live in Lebanon, Connecticut. They lived in that part of old Lebanon which was known as "Lebanon Crank,"
and is now Columbia. Daniel married in Lebanon on February 18, 1740 Hannah Burnham. Daniel and his
bride settled in Sharon, Connecticut.
When the town of Sharon, which is in Litchfield County, was divided into "rights" and sold at auction in New Haven in 1739, Daniel Hunt bought one of the rights. He was one of 19 purchasers. The Sharon records say he had a survey made April 25, 1739; he had land granted to him Jan. 17, 1740, a lay out of land April 18, 1741, and another lay out on Feb. 15, 174_. The history of Sharon says, "Daniel Hunt was from Lebanon, CT. At the earliest settlement of the town he lived on the mountain at what was called the Randall House, now the residence of William __________ (1919). He afterwards lived at the Tanner place near Augustus Peck's. He removed to Vermont before he died." In 1760 Daniel Hunt was appointed lieutenant and later in the same year, captain of the local military company. Three sons of Daniel Hunt settled in Tunbridge, Vermont. Of the three, probably David was the first one to go there, then Simeon, and lastly Daniel, Jr. In the Tunbridge land records, the first mention of David is an entry dated Nov. 24, 1788, in which David sold land to Daniel "both of Tunbridge." (However there is evidence that Daniel did not leave Sharon until after 1799.) On May 8, 1799, according to Book 1, page 196 of the Tunbridge records, Simeon Hunt of Sharon, Conn. bought about 50 acres of land, the east end of lot 174. There is no record to tell just when David and Simeon finally settled in Tunbridge, except that David was married there in 1791, and Simeon in 1793. The first U.S. Census taken in 1790 gives among the heads of families in Litchfield Co., Conn. Daniel and Daniel, 2nd. The family of Daniel, Sr. consisted of two males over 16 and two females, Daniel and his wife, a son and daughter. Daniel Jr.'s family consisted of one male over 16, four under 15, and three females. The family histories of Daniel Jr.'s branch says that both Daniels left Sharon in 1796. After they reached Vermont the old people always lived with the son Daniel. A more careful search of Tunbridge records should probably yield a much more accurate history of family migrations. Daniel and Simeon both lived in the northern part of Tunbridge the rest of their lives, and raised large families. There are no descendants there now of the name of Hunt, but plenty of descendants of the daughters of each Daniel and Simeon. David and his family moved to Richmond township, Crawford Co., PA in 1830. It is not known if he left any descendants in Tunbridge or not. Not much seems to be known about him. When Henry Hunt of Conneaut, Ohio, a son of Daniel's son Horace, was living in Meadville, Pennsylvania he wrote this in a letter to Father Hunt: "Soon after I came here I was introduced to a grocer near here, and he said, 'I am half Hunt myself, as my mother's name was Hunt.' I then inquired and found he was a g.g.child of old David Hunt who left Orange Co. VT some 80 or 90 years ago and settled ten miles from this place. I had heard of this old man by way of my father's story. David Hunt was a brother of your g.g.father, Simeon. Today I called and visited the home of my newly found relative and saw the photos of many of the old Hunts that have departed. There is a strong resemblance among the Hunts that I have known in Ohio and Vermont, also your great uncle Garrison, who died in southern Illinois." This letter was written in 1911. Daniel and Hannah (Burnham) Hunt were buried in the Hunt Cemetery in North Tunbridge, Vermont. This cemetery was given to the town in 1802 by their son Daniel. Their gravestones read: "Mr. Daniel Hunt, died Oct. 7, 1807 in the 99th year of his age. Mrs. Hannah, wife of Mr. Daniel Hunt, died April 8, 1808 in the 87th year of her age." |
