At the time of the April 7, 1930 federal census, Charles was 10 years old and living with his parents and his four siblings on a rented farm in Minden, Benton County, Minnesota. He was attending school at the time. His father was working as a farmer. His dad stated that he and Charles's mother were married when they both were 22 years old. The family did not own a radio [Source: 1930 Federal Census, NA Film No. T626-1078, E.D. 10, p. 3A]. At the time of the Apr. 6, 1940 U.S. federal census, Charles was 21 years old and living as a lodger with the Clarence E. and Esther M. Johnson family on a farm on Town Road in Maywood, Benton, Minnesota. He was working as a farm laborer in farming. Charles enlisted in the Army on June 4, 1942 and served as a PFC during WWII. He was discharged on Sept. 24, 1945. Charles married Lorraine Margaret Voglin on Apr. 29, 1946 and they had a daughter, Mary Joan Balder on Sept. 7, 1950 in Benton County, Minnesota. In 1992 when he was 72 years old, Charles was living on RR 2 in Onamia, Mille Lacs, Minnesota. In 1995 and 1996 he was still listed in the phone book as living in Onamia; his telephone number was 612-532-3560. From 1997 through 2002 he was listed as living in Onamia with the telephone number of 320-532-3560. Charles died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Elim Home in Milaca, Mille Lacs, Minnesota. He was 89 years old. |
