Letter from

DICK QVALE to RAE STIMLER

Qvale Chop.

"July 11

"I'll never be able to thank you enough for the absolutely wonderful time I had in San Francisco. Can't come up with any superlatives which would adequately express my feelings. It was easily one of the greatest times I have ever had.

Beach Blanket Babylon. "I am a rabid fan of 'Beach Blanket Babylon Goes Around the World.' I have tried to describe it but that is impossible. I would go to see it at any time. It certainly wasn't what I expected. I can still see Stevie Wonder, the Queen Mum, the mummies, the poodles, Mary Poppins (she should get flight pay), the hats. Everything. I am going to recommend it to anyone I know who is going to San Francisco. For damn sure. I hope that group goes on for years. They deserve it. It's really ENTERTAINMENT.

"Your place is just great and just right. It was pure fun sitting around and chewing the fat. I felt right at home.

"I like your friends immensely. Phil is enchanted. I think he liked my suggestion of a weight loss diet consisting of two stewed prunes and an enema. Leon is a dandy and is so hooked on horse racing. He belongs in the group. Please give both of them my very best. Even when Meatloaf heaved he did so in a very genteel manner. Happy throwing up to him. I think that the bird crapped on me because she liked me.

Grandpa Butchie and our lovebird.
"The races were great with the exception of a certain pair of horses owned by relatives [Ed. note: owned by Kjell Qvale who also ran the British Motors dealership in San Francisco]. They probably didn't feel like running that day.

"And, certainly not least, Paul and Jody are my kind of people. They are great. Please tell them so for me. It is nice being related. Send me Jody's address. I want to write her.

"When I got home from the airport Tuesday afternoon I took one look at the back yard and went to bed. It was, to say the least, a gadawful mess. The next day I didn't even look at it. I have been working in that damned yard ever since and still am not finished. This is the so-called monsoon season which means nothing but wind and blowing dirt and leaves. Someday, somehow, I will finish. The coolest temperature we have had since I got back in 105. Thankfully the nights are relatively cool.

"I have had to work extra at the clinic. Last Tuesday there were 20 operations and on Wednesday 22. I get more pooped out from that than when I work outside. Dr. Dulaney had scheduled 45 radial keratotomies for yesterday afternoon.

"Queenie says that she will never again fly Northwest Airlines. It was horrible. I have avoided using Northwest for more than 30 years. It has to be the world's largest non-scheduled airline. My flights on PSA were delightful.

"Again, many, many thanks for a wonderful time. Please come see us anytime you can.

"Much love,"
GB (Grandpa Butchie).
