". . . From naval headquarters came a belated report that the United States heavy cruiser Helena and the destroyer escort Ulbert M. Moore were hit by Red shore batteries off the northeast coast. One sailor was killed and two were wounded aboard the destroyer escort Oct. 17. Four were wounded aboard the Helena Oct. 22. Both ships remained in action."

". . . The mighty United States battleship New Jersey and the heavy cruiser Helena led the force that blasted Hungnam, 120 miles north of the 38th parrellel, on Korea's east coast. Communist shore batteries fired on the warships, but the navy announced that none suffered casualties or damage."

". . . Lt. (jg) Richard P. Stimler has recently reported aboard the submarine USS Bowfin where he will serve as assistant gunnery officer, the Navy announced this week. Dick had been aboard the heavy cruiser USS Helena in Korean waters before joining the Bowfin."


5 U.S. Ships Sunk to Date
"WASHINGTON -- (AP) -- Five United States ships have been sunk and 29 damaged by enemy mines, gunfire or bombs during the Korean campaign, the navy said Friday.
"The casualties reported from these actions included 102 killed, 31 missing in action and 282 wounded.
"Four of the ships sunk were mine sweepers, the fifth an army tug. All sank after hitting enemy mines.
"Communist gunfire accounted for damage to 24 ships, including the cruisers Helena and St. Paul. The cruiser Rochester suffered very slight damage from a near miss by an aerial bomb during the Inchon landing, the report said."
