St. Paul, MN, 13 Jan. 1893
Dear Wilhelm. Although I already mailed a longish letter, I wanted
to send you (not decipherable but could be “a few lines”), from my new office. Most of all,
I forgot to wish you a very happy New Year. We are now in the full swing of things here, and next
Tuesday/Wednesday the important position of a US senator will be decided. The republicans for Davis
have the majority. As it looks right now, the democrats are trying to create dissension in the
republican camp and are trying to find an opportunity to elect a better republican than Davis, since
our minority cannot elect a democrat. That’s why we have to chose between two (not decipherable).
Davis was senator and not very effective in many cases. He is a German-hater and against the
Catholics. So far, I like it here. It is a position where one gets a lot of information and is able
to learn a lot. It is a well esteemed position and people would go deep into debt to hold it. It
might have cost me also $300-400 in expenses to become elected. One has to travel within the
district to become acquainted with the people, which entails expenses for travel and food. That is
the custom here. Today I received my first salary of $50, -- for 10 days.
With greetings,
Clemens A. Hünck

This address should be valid until April 1st.
