Koblenz, March 7, 1871
Dear Franziska! At times, when I go for a walk here in Koblenz, I pass by some very nice and sparkling shops, which
basically don’t mean anything to me, but are of interest to me only, because on occasion I find items
that make me think that you would like to own them. Since I happen to remember, that your name-day is
coming up in a few days, I take this opportunity to send you some of those items. Although I would not
consider it as one of the beautiful things, but thought it (more practical ?) than something more
beautiful that you would not have had any use for, also since I know it is a main item that will adorn
your new room. If the trains run on time and all else goes according to plan, this small gift should
arrive promptly and be in your hands on the morning of your name-day. And if it adds to your
happiness on your special day and you remember me fondly every time you see this little lamp, my wish
will have been granted. Should I, however, have made a wrong choice, I ask for your indulgence and to
consider the spirit in which it was given, rather than the gift itself. I am concluding my letter,
trusting that you will accept it as gift from the heart of your esteemed and eternally true,
loving brother-in-law,
Sincerely, Clemens Diekämper
