At the time of the June 5, 1905 Minnesota State Census, Herman was 14 years old and living with his parents and 4 siblings on the family farm in Clear Lake Township, Sherburne, Minnesota [Source: Minnesota State Population Census Schedules, 1865-1905. At the time he appeared before the WWI Draft Board on June 5, 1917, Herman was 26 years old and newly married with no children; he was tall, stout, with light brown hair and light blue eyes. He stated that he previously had had tuberculosis. He was currently working as a self-employed merchant.
 
At the time of the January 30, 1920 U.S. Census, Herman was 28 years old and living with his wife Gertrude and their two young sons in Clear Lake Township, Sherburne, Minnesota. He was working as a storekeeper in a store [Source: 1920 U.S. Census, Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota; Roll T625_861, Page 13B, Enumeration District 172].
 
Five years after he was widowed by the death of his wife Gertrude, Herman married her elder sister, Crescentia.
 
At the time of the April 11, 1930 U.S. Census, Herman was 39 years old and living with his wife Cresence N. and his 3 children at 15 First Ave. NE, St. Cloud City, Benton, Minnesota which they rented for $25/month. He was working as a salesman for a bread company. Herman's last residence was Saint Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota 56301. He died on January 6, 1970 at the age of 78.
