He had two sons and three daughters with Shirley Ann Shumate. He then married Eleanor Martha Mikolajczyk and they had one son together. He then married Katherine G. Prokosch on Nov. 3, 1984, in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Al died of complications of Alzheimer's on Sept. 15, 2016, at the age of 88.
