ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CIVIL WAR ERA CATHOLIC CLERGY PECTORAL CROSS RELIQUARY

"This well-worn silver metal pectoral cross reliquary has an interesting history behind it. It belonged to Rev. Father Valentine Stimmler O.S.B. (1836-1908), Order of St. Benedict , St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota.

"Father Stimmler was born Nicholas Stimmler in Wilsisheim, Alsace, France, and came with his parents to the United States in 1839. The family settled in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, and young Nicholas first attended school there but, despite his parent's strong objections, he moved to Minnesota to study for the priesthood.

"In 1861, on the precipice of the Civil War, Nicholas Stimmler began his studies at St. John's University.

"As one of the university's earliest alumni, he was subsequently appointed chief disciplinarian of the college, after his ordination in 1869. He went on to help build and establish many Catholic churches throughout Minnesota, including the first building where St. John's Abbey and the University now stand. He also served as superior of St. Benedict's Priory.

"Father Stimmler is considered one of the pioneers of the Benedictine Order of the West.

"In his later years, Father Valentine was transferred to St. Joseph's Parrish in Minnesota and then to Saint Anselm's Rectory in New York City, where he died in 1908.

"The interior of the reliquary comprises two primitively constructed textile crosses made of what appears to be woven hair. Little linen or silk packets are stitched to it. There are a total of 7 packets surrounded by coil that is woven throughout the perimeter of cross. Felt lays atop the packets and tucks securely into the coil.

"Seven is the symbolic number of charity, grace, and the Holy Spirit and is the term that stands for perfection. There are seven sacraments, seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, seven deadly sins, seven joys, and seven sorrows of Our Lady.

"These little packets presumably are filled with relics; they are not labeled. The back of one interior cross reads J & P Coats, a manufacture of sewing supplies during this era. The second cross is more tightly affixed to the case and I did not remove it.

"The exterior of the metal cross is engraved P. V. Stimmler OSB. It is in original antique condition. The locking screw is present and in working order. Measures 3-1/8" x 1-1/2." Thickness: 7/8.""
