Obituary of
Thomas E. Chambers, Jr.


Thomas E. Chambers, Jr., 56, of Bloomington, IN, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017, at home after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 14, 1961 in Bloomington, IN. He was the son of Thomas E. Chambers, Sr. and Shirley (Sluss) Brown.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cathryn (Cathy) Creger-Chambers; father, Thomas E. Chambers, Sr. and wife Betty Lou; sisters, Shirley D’Ann (Greg) Mills and Donna Smith brother-in-law, Brad (Louisa) Creger; nieces, Kaycee Hamn, Bailee Smith, and Rachael Creger; and nephews, Cody Chambers, Gerard (Amber) Mills, and Wyatt Creger. He was preceded in death by his sister Debbie L. Ried, and mother, Shirley (Sluss) Brown. Family and friends were very important to Thomas.

Thomas had been taken care of by his wife, Cathy, her parents, Karol and Walter Freytag, and IU Hospice during his final four weeks. His family visited often. Although he was in pain, he remembered to tell everyone “thank you” and “I love you”. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by his entire family, friends, and wonderful neighbors who helped during his final weeks. Thomas will be cremated. His ashes will be spread privately at a later date where he and Cathy married, with friends and family.

Thomas graduated from Edgewood High School in 1979. He went on to serve in the United States Army as a Chaplain’s Assistant, joining on June 1, 1979. He was honorably discharged on June 21, 1983. Thomas continued to serve through the National Guard. Thomas later worked for Indiana University in Building Services for over 27 years. During his career, he was recognized with numerous awards in Building Services, including the Bill Pardue Service Award. Thomas was an avid reader. His interests covered many subjects, from science fiction to Indiana history. He was never without his e-reader.

A service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service. Hospice Chaplin Wendy VanderZee will conduct the memorial.
